Microbial illnesses transmitted through vectors, such as infected ticks, are on the rise due to factors including climate change and encroachment of human development into previously untamed areas. Lyme disease, one such illness caused by several bacteria from the Borrelia bacteria genus, including Borrelia burgdorferi and B. mayonii in the U.S. and B. garinii and B. afzelii in Europe, is currently the most common vector-borne human illness in the northern hemisphere.

When Lyme disease is caught in the first 1-4 weeks after an infectious tick bite, it may cause flu-like symptoms and can be successfully treated with antibiotics. However, when it isn’t caught within the first 1-4 weeks, it can disseminate throughout the body, triggering a long-lasting infection that can take a toll on the nervous system, joints, and heart, causing significant dysfunction and disability.

While many people with Lyme disease recover following the recommended 2–4-week course of antibiotic therapy, 10-20% of people experience ongoing symptoms, which may be related to the ability of Borrelia bacteria to change their form to evade antibiotics.8 In fact, Borrelia bacteria can take on three distinct forms: 1) The active spirochete form; 2) A round body form; and 3) As biofilm, a community of microorganisms embedded in a protective matrix. The round body and biofilm forms are often referred to as the “persister” forms of the Borrelia bacteria and are usually more antibiotic-resistant.



Illness caused by Bartonella, a Gram-negative bacteria and intracellular parasite transmitted to humans by biting insects, such as fleas and possibly ticks, often travels together with Borrelia bacteria. Similar to Lyme disease, the prevalence of Bartonella-related illnesses is increasing. Bartonella most often causes an illness characterized by fever, headache, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and mental health problems.
